Rambelles Decimate Midwestern State in Doubleheader, 10-2 and 10-1

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Rambelle softball team dominated the Midwestern State Mustangs at home in Mayer Stadium as ASU defeated MSU in game one 10-2, and in game two 10-1. The Rambelles are 19-10 overall with an 11-7 conference record.
 
Game One Results:
Ashlyn Lerma kicked things off for Angelo State, scoring the first of multiple runs in the first inning off of a single hit into left field by Ashlynn Box. With two runners on second and third, Keilei Garcia smashed a single up the middle of the field to score Box and advance Madison Fernandez into scoring position at third.
 
Hatty Shope reached first on a fielders choice single to score Fernandez and give the Rambelles a 3-0 lead over Midwestern State. Jade Strother loaded the bases off of a single. Mykayla Stroud hit a single into deep left field to end the first inning for ASU as Garcia and Shope both scored a run to bring the Rambelles to a 5-0- lead over MSU.
 
Midwestern State smashed a home run out of the park in the top of the second inning to cut the Rambelles lead to three, 5-2, but the Blue and Gold rallied behind Makayla Corbin in the circle as the final out came off of a grounder to the third baseman.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Lerma hit a single to left field to kick things off for ASU again, stealing second base shortly afterwards. Lerma advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Box, scoring another run for ASU as Courtney Barnhill hit a single into left field to give the Rambelles a 6-2 lead.
 
Barnhill stole second as Madison Fernandez stepped up to the plate for the Rambelles, where she smashed a double out to right center field to score Barnhill for another run for ASU, 7-2. Garcia smashed a homerun over the left field fence to bring ASU to a 9-2 lead over Midwestern State.
 
With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, Box stepped into the batters box for ASU where she cranked a single into center field to score one run as Avery Ziegler crossed home plate to bring ASU to run rule the Mustangs in the bottom of the fifth innings by eight runs, 10-2.

  • Lerma had four at-bats, registering three hits, two stolen bases, and scoring two runs for ASU.
  • Box had four at-bats, registering two hits, two RBI, and scoring one run against the Mustangs.
  • Fernandez had three at-bats, registering two hits, one RBI, one double, and scoring two runs.
  • Garcia had two at-bats, registering two hits, three RBI, one home run, and scoring two runs.
  • Corbin pitched for four innings, throwing one strikeout and facing 15 batters.
 
Game Two Results:
With Lerma on third after a double from Box into left field, Barnhill stepped up to bat for the Rambelles, where she cranked a homerun over the left center field fence to bring ASU to an early 3-0 lead over Midwestern State in the bottom of the first inning of game two. Garcia smacked her second homerun of the day over the left field fence once again to score one more run for ASU to bring the Blue and Gold to a 4-0 lead over MSU.
 
Genesis Armendariz started the top of the second with the batter striking out looking, while the Rambelle defense took care of the final two outs as one batter grounded out to the second baseman, while the final out of the inning came from a grounder to the third baseman.
 
Ziegler led the Rambelles off in the bottom of the second as she was struck by a pitch and walked to first. Lerma put Ziegler into scoring position as she smacked a double up the middle of the field with Box up to bat behind her. Box scored two more runs for the Rambelles as she also smacked a double up the middle of the field to score Ziegler and Lerma to bring ASU to a 6-0 lead over Midwestern State.
 
Box scored another run for ASU as Fernandez hit a single into right field and advanced Barnhill, who walked, to third and into scoring position. Hatty Shope reached first on a fielders choice and Garcia was thrown out at second, advancing Fernandez to third and scoring Barnhill to give the Rambelles an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
 
The Mustangs scored one run in the top of the third inning as back to back doubles into left-left center field cut the Rambelles lead to seven, 8-1. Armendariz struck two batters out, one looking and the other swinging, while the final out came from a line drive straight to the shortstop.
 
Barnhill started the bottom of the fourth inning off as she hit a double into deep right field, advancing Torrey Hogan to third and into scoring position for the Rambelles. Dirner smacked a single into left field to advance Barnhill to third and scoring Hogan to bring ASU to a 9-1 lead over MSU. Paxton Scheurer hit a sacrifice fly out to the left fielder, scoring Barnhill to bring the Blue and Gold to a nine run lead over Midwestern State, 10-1, bringing game two to an end in favor of Angelo State.

"I'm proud of the way our team played after having the week off last week'", said ASU head softball coach Travis Scott. "It was great to get everyone some playing time tonight."

Angelo State hosts another doubleheader on Sunday, April 11 as the Texas Woman's Pioneers come to San Angelo. Game one will start at 1 p.m., while game two will begin at 3:30 p.m.
