SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team completed the comeback on Thursday night, defeating Midwestern State 75-73 in Lone Star Conference action at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
It's the first conference win of the season for the Rams who improve to 11-3 overall on the year and 1-1 in the LSC while the Mustangs fall to 5-10, 1-4 LSC.
Leading 75-73 with 12 seconds remaining in the game, Midwestern State drove down the court, attempting a last-second shot before
Devaughn Thomas blocked the attempt, sealing the game for ASU.
Dante Moses led the Rams with 17 points on the night, shooting 6-of-10 from the field while adding six rebounds.
After an early 5-3 lead for the Rams in the opening period of play, the Mustangs took control, putting together multiple runs of six or more points before a 9-0 streak gave them the largest lead of the half at 36-21.
Both teams went back and forth to end the first half before MSU took a 42-30 lead into the locker room.
MSU shot 47 percent from the field compared to 42 percent from the Rams while ASU edged out the Mustangs underneath with 35 rebounds to 34 and made 19 free throws on the night.
The comeback started in the second half for ASU as
Tyrell Carroll scored five straight points while the Rams cut the lead to only four points after a 10-2 run.
Carroll finished with 15 points, shooting 4-of-8 while adding six rebounds. Thomas finished with 12 points and six rebounds while
Paul Williams added 10 points.
With 9:21 to play in the game, ASU tied the game after two free throws by
Andre Nunley before a three-pointer by Carroll gave the Rams their first lead of the half at 65-64.
The Rams scored six straight points after layups by Carroll and Moses to go up 74-68 with 1:15 to play, keeping the game out of reach for the Mustangs.
Lathaniel Bastian tallied a team-high eight rebounds to go with eight points while
Kelyn Pennie finished the night with seven points and Nunley added six points.
ASU returns to action on Saturday afternoon as the Rams continue LSC play at home against DBU with tip-off set for 4 p.m.
