Rambelles Grind Out Victory versus Greyhounds

SAN ANGELO – Coming off a big win Thursday against eighth-ranked Lubbock Christian, the Angelo State women's basketball team picked up where they left off this afternoon against Eastern New Mexico, using stout defensive play to grind out a 78-61 victory over the Greyhounds.

The Rambelle defense held the Greyhounds to 32 percent shooting on the day, a season-best for the Rambelles in conference play.

Additionally, the Greyhounds only shot 13.3 percent from three-point range and 50 percent from the free throw line, while the Rambelles shot 36.4 percent and 93.3 percent, respectively. The 36.4 percent mark from deep is a season-best for the Rambelles.

The Greyhounds opened the scoring before buckets by Madeline Stephens and Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant, as well as a three-pointer from Payton Brown, put the Rambelles ahead and would hold onto the lead for the duration of the contest.

The Rambelles struggled from the field in the second quarter, only shooting 26.7 percent for the frame; however, they were able to alleviate their shooting woes by going 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the quarter.

The second half saw the Rambelles shoot 45.9 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from three to slowly build their lead as the game progressed.

Brown led the way offensively for the Rambelles, scoring a season-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and converting three of her six attempts from beyond the arc. The Lubbock native also grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Blakely Gerber and Ashlynn Sharp each scored 13 points, with Gerber shooting 5-of-8 from two-point range while Sharp was perfect from the field in five attempts, including three three-pointers made.

Sawyer Lloyd scored 12 points and assisted a team-high six times, and Stephens added in six points and 10 rebounds.

The Greyhounds were led by a mammoth offensive effort from Iyanna McCurdy, who scored 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the visitors.

The Rambelles improve to 7-10 overall on the season and are 4-2 in conference play. The Rambelles kick off a busy week for them on Tuesday night at home when they host UT Permian Basin, who are still searching for their first conference win of the season.
