Big Four Lead Rambelles to Victory Over Western Colorado

GUNNISON, Colo. – After 40 minutes of action at the highest collegiate gym in the world, the Angelo State women's basketball team improved to 2-0 after defeating Western Colorado 66-51 on their home court late Saturday evening.
 
The Rambelles improve to 2-0 on the season with the victory, while the Mountaineers fall to 0-2.
 
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
  • As the Rambelles and Mountaineers traded buckets for the first couple of minutes, five straight points by Sawyer Lloyd pulled ASU ahead 9-4 at the 5:43 mark in the first quarter.
  • Payton Brown would add a jumper while Lloyd tacked on a free throw as the first frame ended with the Belles up just two, 14-12.
  • Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant and Madeline Stephens would get two quick buckets to start the second quarter, pulling the Belles ahead by four, 18-14.
  • A Stephens layup would give the Belles an eight point advantage with 5:05 remaining, 27-19.
  • The Blue and Gold hit a cold spell, scoring just three points in the final five minutes, taking a 30-25 lead into the half.
  • Stephens, Lloyd, and McGhee-Pleasant would all add buckets to start the third, bringing the Belles lead to its largest yet, 12 points, with 7:51 remaining in the quarter.
  • Madisen Honea would be the fifth Belle to score in the contest as she drained a triple to extend the Belles lead to 17, 46-29, their largest lead of the game.
  • WCU went on a 9-2 run to bring the game back within ten, trailing 48-38 with just over two minutes left in the quarter.
  • Brown and McGhee-Pleasant would add free throws to give the Belles a 51-38 advantage heading into the last chapter.
  • The Mountaineers would chip away at the Belles lead in the first half of the fourth quarter, whittling the lead down to just six, 53-47, with 6:25 to go.
  • The Belles answered by scoring the next 11 points over a five minute stretch to put the game out of reach, 64-47 with just over a minute remaining.
  • Stephens would knock down a pair of free throws as the contest ended 66-51 in favor of the Belles.
 
GAME STATS
  • The Belles big four, Brown, Lloyd, McGhee-Pleasant, and Stephens scored 61 of the Rambelles 66 points in Gunnison Saturday evening.
  • Lloyd led the way with her second straight 20-point outing and her first double-double of the year after scoring 24 points on 60 percent shooting and pulling down 11 rebounds.
  • Brown scored 16, Stephens scored 12, and McGhee-Pleasant flirted with a double-double as she finished with nine points and nine boards.
  • As a team the Belles shot 39.1 percent from the field, while limiting the Mountaineers to 31.5 percent on the other end.
  • Each team pulled down 40 rebounds in the 40 minute contest, the Belles had 29 defensive and 11 offensive boards.
  • The Belles had 18 assists on the evening and were able to force WCU into committing 20 turnovers.

The Rambelles will continue their early season road trip as they head to Joplin, Mo. for a matchup with Missouri Southern at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on Thursday, Nov. 17th, tip scheduled for 12 p.m.
