SAN ANGELO – With only two games left in the regular season for the Angelo State volleyball team, the Rambelles look to end their up-and-down regular season on a high note as they welcome two of the top five teams in the Lone Star Conference standings this weekend.
Second-place DBU and fifth-place UT Tyler are the final tests for the Belles, who currently occupy the eighth and final tournament spot entering the weekend.
The Belles are 11-15 overall on the season and 7-7 in conference play; they also sit only one game ahead of three teams in the conference standings, with two games remaining for all teams.
The Belles' offense this past weekend was powered behind the offensive exploits of
Elsa Lamphere. The junior outside hitter buried 30 kills and averaged 3.75 per set last weekend, nearly doubling the next-highest output from any Belle. The Coloradoan has 160 kills this season and has recorded five double-doubles.
Laney Dale was the Belles' top assister last weekend, averaging seven assists per set; against Oklahoma Christian, the Brock native assisted 39 times and recorded 26 digs, both career-highs for the setter in an ASU uniform.
The Belles' libero combination of Ireland Ferguson and
Caleigh Enax totaled 70 digs, or 8.75 digs per set, over the weekend, with Ferguson the standout performer against the Eagles. The freshman tallied a career-high 39 digs, second-most for a Belle in a match in the rally-scoring era. The 39 digs are also tied for the second-most digs any player in the LSC has totaled in a match this season.
Saturday's match against the Patriots will also feature the Belles honoring their three seniors – Sydney Mundkowksy, Katy Motz, and
Grace White – before their final match inside the Junell Center.
After being a role player in her first two seasons in San Angelo, Mundkowsky has emerged as one of the Belles' top offensive threats this season, leading the team with 209 kills. The Gatesville native has had nine matches with double-digit kills this season, and two matches with 20 or more kills, including a career-high 24 kills against Lubbock Christian in a five-set win on October 7
th.
A fifth-year transfer, Motz joined the Belles after previous stops at Pace University and Truman State. The Cedar Park native has assisted 144 times this season, recording a season-high 23 assists against Texas A&M International on October 22
nd.
Due to a redshirt season and the COVID season granted to all athletes, this season is the sixth for
Grace White in an ASU uniform. The Helotes native has played in 272 sets over 97 matches in San Angelo, recording exactly 400 kills and 198 total blocks. White is a two-time all-LSC selection and helped lead the Belles to the AVCA National Championship in Spring 2021.
SCOUTING THE LADY PATRIOTS
DBU is 21-5 this season and 12-2 in LSC play; they are coming off a week in which they lost a non-conference matchup to Southern Nazarene and a conference match to St. Edward's before rebounding to defeat St. Mary's. They are second in the standings, a half-game ahead of Texas A&M International and 1.5 games ahead of Texas A&M-Kingsville.
DBU leads the conference in service aces and hitting percentage, with 2.18 aces per set and a team hitting percentage of .273 on the season.
Kenzie McNeill leads the LSC with 0.50 service aces per set, and teammate Shaylee Shore leads in hitting percentage with a .380 mark this season.
The Belles are 5-0 all-time against the Belles, winning in Dallas last season 3-1; the last time these two teams met in San Angelo was in 2019 when the Belles won in four sets.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
UT Tyler is 17-8 on the season and 10-4 in conference play; like the Belles, they were also swept in Arkansas by UAFS last week before rebounding to win over St. Mary's and St. Edward's. The Patriots are fifth in the LSC standings, 1.5 games back of third place and a half-game behind fourth-place Texas A&M-Kingsville; they are also only a half-game ahead of sixth-place St. Mary's.
All-American Mikayla Ware leads the Patriots. The senior outside hitter leads the conference with 12.33 attacks per set while also leading the LSC with 392 kills this season, averaging 4.51 per set; she is also the highest point scorer in the conference, averaging 4.99 per set.
The Patriots beat the Belles at the LSC Crossover back on September 9
th, with Ware leading all players with 16 kills in San Angelo, their first-ever win over the Belles in four attempts.
