SAN ANGELO, Texas – After trailing by as many as six points in the fourth quarter, the Angelo State women's basketball team opened their home schedule with a 70-63 victory over fifth ranked Eckerd College Tuesday afternoon.
The Rambelles improve to 4-1 with the victory at home. The No. 5 Tritons drop their first game of the season, falling to 3-1.
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
- Madisen Honea scored five points in the first five minutes as the teams went back and forth with the Rambelles jumping ahead 13-12 with 5:33 to go in the first.
- Payton Brown hit a jumper to put the Rambelles up five, 20-15 with 1:55 remaining in the quarter.
- The Tritons would add a bucket as the teams went into the second separated by just three, 20-17.
- 11 quick points by Sawyer Lloyd and Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant pushed the Rambelles ahead by 12, 31-19, with over six minutes to play in the half.
- A Madeline Stephens layup would stretch the lead to its largest, 35-21, a 14-point advantage with five and a half to go in the half.
- The Tritons then scored nine straight to pull the game back within reach, 35-30 with three minutes to play in the half.
- The Rambelles added three more, taking a 38-32 lead into the break.
- Eckerd had the third quarter advantage as they tied the game at 43 with 3:54 to go in the quarter.
- The Tritons outscored the Rambelles 17-11 in the quarter as the teams entered the last stanza tied 49-49.
- Eckerd got off to a hot start in the fourth, pulling ahead by six with 6:32 to go after going on a 10-0 run.
- The Rambelles would answer as Stephens scored seven points as part of a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to pull the Belles ahead 68-61.
- McGhee-Pleasant would add two final free throws as the Rambelles downed the undefeated fifth ranked Tritons 70-63.
GAME STATS
- McGhee-Pleasant led the way for the Rambelles, scoring a team-high 21 points while pulling down eight rebounds.
- Lloyd, Brown, and Stephens also scored in double figures, putting up 14, 13, and 13 points respectively.
- Stephens put in work down the stretch on the offensive glass as she grabbed five offensive rebounds in the game.
- The Rambelles were able to outrebound the Tritons 42-36 in the contest, giving them six more offensive possessions.
- The Rambelles and Tritons were similar on the offensive end, the Blue and Gold shot 40.9 percent (27-66) from the field, while Eckerd shot 40 percent (24-60) from the field.
- Both teams scored 16 second chance points and the Rambelles just edged the Tritons having a 16-15 points off turnovers advantage.
