Rams Keep Winning Streak Alive with Strong Second Half versus Oklahoma Christian

SAN ANGELO – Three Rams – Fredelin De La Cruz, Steve Webb, and Willie Guy – all scored in double digits for the Angelo State men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon against Oklahoma Christian, and despite a nine-point deficit at halftime, the Rams dug deep and made a second-half comeback to extend their winning streak to six games with a 70-67 triumph over the Eagles.

"I'm very proud of our team for not giving up when things weren't going our way," said head coach Vinay Patel. "To trail the entire game and find a way to win at the end of the game says a lot about the guys in our locker room. We had some guys step up down the stretch and make big-time plays to give us a chance."

The Rams improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in Lone Star Conference play; they are one of two teams to start the conference schedule undefeated in four games, along with West Texas A&M.

Oklahoma Christian got off to a hot start in the first half, shooting 65 percent from the field and 67 percent from three-point range. The Eagles' biggest lead of the first half was ten points, and they made a three-pointer right before the half to carry a nine-point lead into intermission.

"Our defense did a much better job in the second half of just being solid," said Patel. "Oklahoma Christian is a very talented team, and we were fortunate to come away with a win today."

An eight-point lead with just under 14 minutes to play for the Eagles was cut to just a single point due to made layups by Guy and Webb before Barlow Alleruzzo IV drained a three off an Eagle turnover.

The Rams' first lead of the contest came with 1:26 left in the game, courtesy of an and-one layup from De La Cruz. The Eagles tied it up with 1:05 left before a layup from Webb and a pair of free throws from Devaughn Thomas sealed the game for the Rams.

De La Cruz led the Rams with 18 points in just 20 minutes of action as he battled foul trouble. Webb scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, the most he has scored in an ASU uniform; Guy added in 11 points, making half of his six attempts from deep for the afternoon.

Despite the Eagles' hot first half, the Rams out-shot the hosts with a 48.1 percent mark from the field. The Rams also took care of the ball, only committing six turnovers, their lowest mark of the season, while they forced the Eagles into 14 turnovers.

"It is always going to be hard to win games in the Lone Star," said Patel. "We did a great job of finding a way to win both of our games on the road this week, but we need to continue to improve."

The Rams are in action next weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic.
