Silver City, N. M. – The Angelo State women's basketball team, for the first time in five attempts this season, claimed a road victory, defeating Western New Mexico 61-53 Thursday night.
This is the Rambelles first road win since January 22
nd, when they beat St. Mary's in San Antonio for their lone win last season.
The Rambelles are the hottest team currently in the LSC, winning four games in a row, tied with Texas Woman's for longest active winning streak in the conference. After an 0-8 start to the season,
Alesha Ellis' team has won nine of their past 11 games.
A stout defense that forced 20 Mustangs turnovers helped the Rambelles claim their first road win. The Rambelles relied on defense on a night in which they only shot 28.6 percent from the field, their second-worst shooting night of the season. Despite this, the Rambelles did shoot 9-of-25 from three-point range, with the 36 percent being their third-best mark of the season.
The Rambelles' top three three-pointing shooting nights have happened in their past three games.
Four Rambelles scored in double-digits, led by
Payton Brown's 13 points. The Rambelles' point guard made a trio of threes and assisted four times while also recording three steals on the defensive side of the ball.
Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant recorded her second double-double in as many games with 11 points and 13 rebounds. McGhee-Pleasant's effort on the boards helped the Rambelles out-rebound the hosts 44-38 on the evening. The Amarillo native also recorded three steals on defense.
Sawyer Lloyd and
Ashlynn Sharp scored 12 points each. Lloyd also grabbed six rebounds and four steals while Sharp shot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in 17 minutes off the bench. The senior guard has reached double-digits in two of the past three games, after only doing so once in the first 16 games of the season. Her four made threes are a single-game best for the Rambelles this season.
Blakely Gerber came up just shy of a double-double, with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Rambelles improve to 9-10 overall on the season and 6-2 in conference play. They are back in action on Saturday against West Texas A&M, who are also 6-2 in LSC play this season.
