SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team returned to winning ways this afternoon, defeating St. Mary's 88-68 at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio.
The win improves the Rams overall record to 15-7 and brings their Lone Star Conference record back to .500, sitting at 5-5. The Rattlers drop to 10-9 on the season and 7-3 in the LSC.
The Rams got their offensive rhythm back, shooting 55 percent from the field, 43 percent from beyond the arc, and 82 percent from the free throw line, great shooting all the way around. The Rams got points from all around, six players reached double digit points led by
Tyrell Carroll with 17 points and six rebounds.
ASU was dominant in the paint on the afternoon, on the glass, grabbing 39 rebounds to only 24 of StMU, and scoring 42 points, 20 more than the Rattlers. The Rams shared the ball well, totaling 17 assists on the afternoon.
Through the first five minutes, the game was tightly contested until a 11-0 run for the Rams pushed them ahead by 10. A layup by
Paul Williams and nine straight points from Carroll were the catalysts of the run.
The Rattlers would not back down, clawing back into the game, and taking the lead following three straight three pointers with 8:31 to go. The first half would end with the home team up just one point, 37-36, following two threes by
Kelyn Pennie down the stretch for the Rams.
Pennie ended with 13 points on the evening, Williams added 15 of his own, and
Miles Macadory was efficient all-around contributing 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, six assists, and five boards in 24 minutes.
Dante Moses and
Lathaniel Bastian scored 12 and 10 respectively to round out the double-digit scorers for ASU.
The second period began very similar to the first with the teams trading leads before the Rams went on a 10-0 run with 11:59 remaining to grab a 12-point advantage.
The Rams poured it on, going on a 20-6 run to separate the two teams by 23 points, the largest lead in the game with 4:06 to go. Late free throws by Bastian, Williams, and
Andre Nunley would be the last contributions before the final whistle ended the Rams losing streak at two games.
The Rams will return home in their next game which will be Thursday, February 10
th against Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Junell Center at 7:30 p.m.
