Belles Mount Comeback to Defeat the Mustangs

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's tennis team came from behind against Midwestern State on Saturday, winning 4-3 despite dropping the doubles point. The win is the first one this season for coach Chris Bizot's squad in which they claimed victory despite not securing the doubles point.

A 6-3 scoreline decided all three doubles matches, with #28 Anda Ghinga/Hannah Yip and #44 Emilija Visic/Casie Curry winning on lines one and two for Midwestern State, while Eva Schwartz and Esther Bowers won their match at line three for the Belles.

Playing for the second match in a row at the top singles line, #17 Dianela Rodriguez defeated #36 Ghinga in a ranked matchup in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Ena Ovcina and Schwartz won on lines two and three in straight sets, while Midwestern State won on lines four and five in two sets.

The match came down to the lone matchup that went three sets, line six between Midwestern's Skylar Minns and the Belles' Alexandra Vishnevskaya.

Vishnevskaya took the first set 6-3 before Minns fought off defeat in set two, taking it in a tie-break 7-6 (7-3). Vishnevskaya bounced back for the win with a 6-1 victory in set three.

The Belles improve to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Next weekend, they are back in action for a trio of road matches, facing Arkansas Tech in a non-conference match before facing UAFS and Cameron in conference play.
