Lawton, Okla. – The Angelo State women's tennis team ended their three-match road trip in perfect style, capping their 3-0 weekend with a 5-2 victory over the nation's sixth-ranked team, Cameron.
This marks the highest-ranked opponent that the Belles have defeated since the program's reboot in the 2017-18 school year.
Despite
Mieke Van Deventer and
Ena Ovcina dropping their doubles match at line one,
Valentina Gonzalez and
Esther Bowers won on line three; and
Ayda Guler and
Ramitha Irrinki won a tiebreaker at line two to clinch the doubles point for the Belles.
The Belles would quickly jump out to a 3-0 lead with straight-set victories by Irrinki (line six) and Ovcina (line three), with Ovcina beating 35
th-ranked Lea Manga.
Wins by the Aggies at lines two and five saw the advantage puled back to 3-2.
Eva Schwartz officially clinched the match at line four with a 6-3, 6-3 victory before
Dianela Rodriguez put the cherry on top with a win at line one over No. 31 Vasilisa Polunova.
The Belles improve to 13-5 overall on the season and 5-1 in conference play. They are in action at home next weekend against UT Tyler and #3 Central Oklahoma.
