Denton, Texas – The Angelo State volleyball team improved to 3-0 in conference play after a four-set victory over Texas Woman's on Wednesday night, becoming the first team in the Lone Star Conference to reach that benchmark.
The Belles' attackers were on fire in the opening set, hitting .424 for the frame. The back-and-forth set one saw the Belles stretch out to lead with a 4-0 run in the middle of the set, with freshman
Cate Boldrick burying a pair of kills to go along with a couple of Pioneer attack errors. The Belles would rattle off another 3-0 run later in the set to keep pulling away from the hosts, eventually taking the set 25-19.
The switch in sides on the court for both teams also signaled a shift in momentum for the second set as the Belles turned in a negative attack percentage.
Things switched once again for the third set as the Belles hit .323 and held the Pioneers to eight kills and eight attack errors. The early portion of the third set featured a 6-0 run for the Belles as libero
Caleigh Enax held serve, adding in a service ace, while
Sydney Mundkowsky contributed a pair of kills during the run. Enax would hold serve for a 5-0 run towards the end of the set as the Belles claimed set three 25-12.
After conceding the first point in set four, the Belles would go on a 10-2 run, with Enax holding serve again as the sophomore added a pair of service aces. The Belles' libero held serve for an additional 4-0 run towards the end of the match. The Belles forced the Pioneers into ten attack errors for the set while only converting six kills.
For the second-straight match, Mundkowsky led the Belles in kills with 17, the only Belles to hit double figures. The Gatesville product also hit .295 for the match.
Hannah Kinnison led the Belles with 22 digs while Enax had 21, in addition to her three service aces.
Setter
Kayla Baer recorded another double-double with 28 assists with 12 digs, while
Laney Dale had 14 assists off the bench.
Marina Sanchez led the team with eight blocks and added five kills.
Kaila Garnett and
Elsa Lamphere each recorded seven kills, while Boldrick had six.
The Belles improve to 7-8 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. They are back home on Saturday afternoon to host Midwestern State.
