Rambelles Dominate Defensively, Down No. 13 Lady Buffs 60-53

SAN ANGELO, Texas – In their first home contest of the new year, the Angelo State women's basketball team held No. 13 West Texas A&M to just 22 percent shooting from the field en route to a 60-53 win in the Junell Center Thursday evening.
 
The Rambelles improve to 12-2 on the year and 7-1 in Lone Star Conference play, while extending their winning streak to six games. The Lady Buffs drop to 12-3 on the year and 5-2 in conference play.
 

40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
  • Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant and Madisen Honea got things started for the Rambelles, scoring the first six points to give the Blue and Gold a 6-2 lead with just over half the first quarter remaining.
  • Sawyer Lloyd hit a jumper with 2:23 left in the first to extend the Rambelles lead to eight, 13-5.
  • Madeline Stephens made a layup late in the quarter before the Lady Buffs beat the buzzer, giving the Rambelles a five-point lead going into the second.
  • Both sides battled for the first half of the second quarter, separated by only five after a WT bucket.
  • The Rambelles scored the next six to bring their lead to its largest to this point, 29-18, an 11-point gap.
  • WT hit two free throws down the stretch as the Rambelles took a 29-20 lead into the break.
  • The Rambelles got their lead back to 11 early in the third as Brighton Adams drained a triple and McGhee-Pleasant scored in the paint.
  • The Lady Buffs owned the final 6:16 of the third quarter, reducing the Rambelles lead to just three, 40-37, going into the final frame.
  • WT picked up in the fourth where they left off the third, taking the lead for the first time in the contest, 45-44 with 8:06 to go.
  • The Rambelles responded, scoring eight straight to go back up seven, 52-45 with 5:57 to play.
  • The Lady Buffs did their best to mount a comeback, but could not get closer than five as Lloyd and Honea sunk free throws to see the Rambelles to a 60-53 win over the Buffs.
 
GAME STATS
  •  McGhee-Pleasant scored a season high 22 points and pulled down 12 boards, earning her fifth double-double of the year.
  • Stephens put up 16 points on 7-12 shooting, pulling down 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double in the 2022-23 season.
  • Lloyd found herself all over the scorebook again, with eight points, eight assists, four steals, and two rebounds.
  • Freshman Landry Morrow played an important 30 minutes off the bench, contributing six points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
  • The Rambelles held the number two offense in the LSC to their second lowest scoring game of the season, limiting the Lady Buffs to just 53 points on 21.9 percent shooting.
  • The Rambelles dominated inside, outscoring WT 34-6 in points in the paint.
  • In a complete defensive performance, the Rambelles had 12 steals and five blocks, scoring 20 points off turnovers.
  • The win at the Junell Center snaps a five-game losing streak to the Lady Buffs and marks the first win over WT since the 2018-19 season.
