SAN ANGELO, Texas – In a competitive contest that came down to the last second, the Angelo State women's basketball team defeated Lubbock Christian 53-51 after
Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant drained a step back jumper with under a second remaining to give the Lady Chaps their second conference loss.
The Rambelles improve to 12-3 on the year and are now 8-1 in Lone Star Conference action after winning their seventh consecutive contest. The Lady Chaps fall to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in LSC play.
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
- McGhee-Pleasant scored the first four points of the contest as the Rambelles jumped to an early lead Saturday afternoon.
- Landry Morrow hit a triple to give the Rambelles an early eight-point lead, 11-3, with 3:29 still in the first.
- Keniah Williams scored four points down the stretch as the Rambelles took a 17-10 into the second.
- The Lady Chaps came out hot in the second, scoring the first eight points to take their first lead 18-17.
- Madeline Stephens converted on a fast break opportunity to keep the Rambelles within one, trailing 24-23 with just under three minutes to play.
- LCU put up four more before the break to take a 28-23 lead into the half.
- The Lady Chaps kept the momentum through the first half of the third quarter, leading 38-30 with 5:08 to go.
- Buckets by Sawyer Lloyd, McGhee-Pleasant, and Stephens down the stretch pulled the Rambelles back within two, trailing 41-39 entering the fourth.
- McGhee-Pleasant scored four straight for the Rambelles to tie the contest up 43-43 with 7:33 remaining.
- Both teams would lose their mark from the field as only five points were scored over the next four minutes, LCU still leading 46-45.
- The teams would battle back and forth for the lead, Briley Merket hit a layup to pull the Rambelles ahead 50-49 with 1:21 to go.
- The Lady Chaps tied the game 51-51 with nine second remaining before McGhee-Pleasant hit a step back jumper with only .9 seconds left to give the Rambelles the 53-51 victory.
GAME STATS
- Stephens dominated the paint again and was the Rambelles leading scorer with 18 points and nine rebounds.
- McGhee-Pleasant scored 16 points and pulled in 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double this season, her second in a row and fourth in the last five games.
- Lloyd again was huge for the Rambelles defensively, she scored five points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out seven assists, and had six steals.
- Morrow again played big minutes off the bench, scoring seven points and playing crucial defense down the stretch.
- Both offenses struggled from the field, the Rambelles shot 35 percent from the field while the Lady Chaps were held to just 30 percent.
- The Lady Chaps bright spot was from beyond the arc as they shot 30 percent from downtown.
- The Rambelles edged the Lady Chaps in rebounding, grabbing 42 to the Chaps 41.
- This is just the second time the Rambelles have beaten the Chaps in their last ten contests, but the Rambelles have won two of the last three.
