SAN ANGELO – Three Rams –
Kevon Godwin,
Reggie Quezada, and
Devaughn Thomas – scored 15 or more points and the Angelo State men's basketball defense held Lubbock Christian to a season-low 38.7 percent shooting from the field as the Rams claimed a 77-65 victory inside the Junell Center on Saturday afternoon.
"Big-time effort on the defensive end from our guys tonight," said head coach
Vinay Patel. "LCU is very disciplined on offense, and we knew this would be a challenging game for us on that end of the floor. I was equally impressed with how we were sharing the ball on offense. Several guys turned shots down to get their teammate an even better shot."
The win sees the Rams improve to 11-3 on the season and 7-1 in conference play; this marks their eighth-straight victory inside the Junell Center dating back to last season.
A pair of buckets by Quezada started the Rams off in a game in which they never trailed the Chaps.
The first half saw the Rams hold the lead as big as 16 points as they held the visitors to 28.6 percent shooting from the field; for the game, the Rams forced the Chaps into ten turnovers and 22.6 percent shooting from three-point range.
"This was the second game in a row where our post players had to defend on the perimeter to defend," said Patel. "It shows the versatility of our team. We have played a lot of different lineups and ask a lot of our players. Barlow [Alleruzzo IV], Steve [Webb], and Devaughn [Thomas] have to play multiple positions, and we constantly move them around on the court. Their improved play as a group has lifted our team."
Godwin shot 5-of-9 from the field and made three of his six attempts from three-point range. The Floridian also grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists.
Quezada's 16 points came on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, making a pair of threes. Quezada grabbed five rebounds and led the team with four assists.
Thomas' 15 points are a season-high for the Louisiana native and only the third time he has scored ten or more points in a game this season. Thomas also led the rebounding effort with eight boards, and as a team, the Rams out-rebounded the Chaps 40-25.
Willie Guy and
Steve Webb each scored eight points, with Webb grabbing a game-high three steals.
The Rams continue their home stand next weekend when they host Midwestern State and Cameron.
"We have a huge week coming up. There is never a night off in the LSC," said Patel, "and we will get to work right away to be prepared to play our best basketball next week. I want to thank the fans once again! Playing in the Junell Center has been amazing, and we need your support again next week!"
