No. 20 Rams’ Defense Jams UTPB in 2023 Home Finale

SAN ANGELO – A blistering first half offensively for the 20th-ranked Angelo State men's basketball team saw them close out the 2023 home schedule with an undefeated record as they downed UT Permian Basin 74-65 on Tuesday afternoon inside the Junell Center – Stephens Arena.

The first half saw the Rams outscore the Falcons 42-20 as the Rams shot 61.5 percent from the field and held their opponents to a 26.9 percent mark before the intermission.

The difference in the game proved to be a Rams' 17-0 run to close out the first half. With the score 25-20, the Rams ballooned their lead into a 22-point deficit, which saw them close out the win despite a valiant Falcons effort after the intermission.

The Rams held the Falcons to 0-for-9 shooting from the field and forced three turnovers; in the final 5:30 of the first half, the Rams shot 5-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.

The Rams shot 50.9 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from three-point range, both team-highs for the Rams in conference play.

The Rams also controlled the boards against the league's best rebounding team, out-rebounding the Falcons 36-28.

Kevon Godwin led the Rams' offense with 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field, also converting four of his five three-point attempts. He grabbed five rebounds and four assists and led the team with two steals.

Keyshawn Embery-Simpson scored 18 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field and, like Godwin, made four three-pointers. He grabbed five rebounds and chipped in a pair of assists as the Rams assisted 15 times on their 28 field goals.

Trey Farrer recorded his second double-double for the Blue and Gold, scoring 12 points and securing ten rebounds. Willie Guy led the Rams with six assists on the afternoon.

The Rams improve to 8-1 on the season and 5-0 in LSC play, the only team currently holding a 5-0 record in conference play. They close out the 2023 calendar year with a 13-0 record inside the Junell Center – Stephens Arena.

The Rams improve to 10-0 in LSC play in November and December under head coach Vinay Patel, and the Rams are 17-0 on their home floor under Patel's guidance.

The Rams play their final non-conference games of the regular season this upcoming Monday and Tuesday at the Daytona Beach Shootout in Daytona Beach, Florida, where they will take on Rollins and No. 6 West Liberty.
