SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team opened the 2023 George and Ola McCorkle Challenge presented by Bahlman Cleaners with a pair of victories over Texas A&M International and East Central, beating the Dustdevils 6-1 before downing the Tigers 8-1.
The Rambelles started the scoring off in the first inning of game one with a
Paxton Scheurer sacrifice fly and
Madison Fernandez stealing home plate to push across a pair of runs.
The score remained 2-0 until the sixth inning when the Dustdevils pushed across their lone run.
The bottom half of the same inning saw the Rambelles score four more runs to secure the victory.
With the bases loaded, the Rambelles scored on a Dustdevil wild pitch that was dropped mid-motion by pitcher Tessa Ramirez.
Pinch hitter
Ashton McMillan delivered a two-out double that scored two Rambelles; the hit was the first-career extra-base hit for the San Angelo product.
Layni Tanner's infield single would push across the sixth and final run for the Rambelles.
Torrey Hogan turned in a sublime performance inside the circle, scattering three hits and one unearned run across 6.1 innings of work. The Lubbock native only threw 79 pitches while striking out three batters.
Ashlyn Lerma kicked off the Rambelle offense in game two with a single and a stolen base before scoring on a Tanner single.
East Central would produce an RBI double in the top of the second inning to tie the score.
Scheurer's fifth home run of the season, a solo blast to left field, regifted Angelo State the lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Lerma and Tanner singled to lead off the fifth inning, and Scheurer drew a walk to load the bases for Fernandez, whose liner through the right side plated a pair of Rambelle runs.
With the bases loaded later in the inning,
Maleya Burns drew a walk to drive in the third run, which pushed the score to 5-1.
The next inning would see Lindsay Evans deliver her second home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left field fence to push the score to 8-1.
Genesis Armendariz picked up her third complete-game win of the season, only allowing two hits and one run while striking out nine batters.
The Rambelles continue action tomorrow on day two of the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge presented by Balhman Cleaners, playing the Tigers and Dustdevils again.
