SAN ANGELO – On Sunday afternoon at Mayer Field, the Angelo State softball team took a 3-2 victory over second-ranked UT Tyler for the second game in a row, with this win coming courtesy of an eighth-inning walk-off by senior
Maleya Burns.
The win sees the Rambelles improve to 12-8 on the season and 4-5 in conference play.
The first three innings did not see either team score; the Rambelles started the scoring off in the fourth inning, with
Lindsey Evans leading off the inning with a solo home run, her sixth this season.
A walk by
Ashton McMillan and a single by
Bailey Martinez set the table for Burns, who singled in McMillan to extend the Rambelle lead to 2-0.
The Patriots would respond in the next half-inning with a pair of runs.
Martinez led the eighth inning off with a double over the Patriots' right fielder's head; pinch-runner
Jasmine Warriner would score the deciding run on Burns' double to right field, a line drive that just evaded Patriots first baseman Avery Farr's glove.
The Rambelles tallied nine hits over the Patriots; all four of the Rambelles' wins over the Patriots all-time have come by 3-2 scorelines.
Evans, McMillan, Martinez, and Burns each tallied two hits in the win.
In the two wins, Burns went 4-for-5 from the plate with a single, a double, a triple, a home run, and four RBIs.
Genesis Armendariz picked up her second win in as many games; unlike last night, she appeared in relief of
Cheyenne Floyd, who threw the first 4.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned).
Armendariz improves to 8-2 on the season, only allowing one hit in 3.2 innings inside the circle.
The Rambelles are back in action next Friday and Saturday in Wichita Falls to take on Midwestern State in a three-game series.
