VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Angelo State track & field teams concluded day one of the 2023 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships, competing at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.
Elvis Kryukov currently sits in third place in the men's heptathlon through four events, totaling 3,118 points. He took first overall in the shot put, throwing a distance of 14.71m (48'-3.25").
Simon Rey is in 11
th with 2,852 points followed by
Kyle Lumpkins in 13
th with 2,812 points. The final three events of the heptathlon will finish tomorrow.
Oussama Elbouchayby tallied the fastest time in the opening round of the men's 800-meter run, crossing the finish line at 1:51.04.
"Overall, it was a solid first day for us," said Head Coach Tom Dibbern. "We missed on a few opportunities but also have some kids sitting in scoring position that we weren't expecting. We need to take advantage of the opportunities we have tomorrow and it can be a very solid meet for us."
The Belles had two athletes qualify for the next round of the women's 400-meter run with
Shiean Walters taking second overall with a time of 53.72 while
Zykia McDaniel took seventh overall at 55.03.
Shadae Findley collected Second-Team All-American accolades after finishing 10th overall in the event with a time of 55.31.
Fatoumata Kabo finished 17
th overall in the women's 200-meter dash, running a time of 24.77. Also taking 17
th was
Maricia Spence in the long jump, hitting a distance of 5.40m (17'-8.75").
The championships continue tomorrow beginning with the women's pentathlon at 9:30 a.m.
