OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian, winning 9-2 and 15-3 to take a three-game lead in the series at Dobson Baseball Field.
The pair of victories moves the Rams to 20-3 overall on the season and in Lone Star Conference play.
GAME ONE: ASU 9, OCU 2
The long ball lifted the Rams over the Eagles in game one of the day as
Tripp Clark started things off with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning.
After OCU got a run in the second, ASU tallied three more runs in the fifth off a home run by
Jacob Guerrero to extend the lead to 5-1.
Kade Bragg started on the mound for the Rams, throwing six innings with only two hits and one run while striking out nine batters.
Caleb Heuertz threw an inning of relief, allowing one run off one hit to go along with two strikeouts.
The Rams collected a run in the sixth off a fielding error before adding three more in the seventh as
Thomas Cain brought in two with a double followed by an RBI single by
Tyler Boggs.
GAME TWO: ASU 15, OCU 3
Clark picked up where he left off in game one, hitting a two-RBI double in the first inning of game two.
Jordan Williams and
Weston Valasek followed that up with RBI singles before a passed ball brought in the fifth run of the inning.
The Rams added a run in the second inning off a sac fly by Williams before he earned another RBI in the fourth on a groundout.
Hunter Mayo made his first start of the season on the mound for ASU, throwing 4 2/3 innings with six hits and two runs with three strikeouts to improve to 1-0.
Jackson Haga threw 1 2/3 innings in relief, not allowing a hit while picking up two punchouts.
In the fifth inning, Clark singled through the left side to bring in two runs before a throwing error added another to give the Rams a 10-0 advantage.
After a couple of runs by the Eagles in the bottom of the inning, the Rams answered back with five in the sixth as
Justin Harris hit a bases-clearing double before
Reese Johnson hit a two-run shot over the right field wall.
The Rams and Eagles will close out the series tomorrow with game four scheduled for 1 p.m.
