LUBBOCK, Texas – The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against Lubbock Christian, winning game one 5-0 before an offensive showcase in game two, winning 20-6 at Hays Field.
With the pair of victories, the Rams improve to 29-4 overall on the year and 27-4 in Lone Star Conference action.
GAME ONE: ASU 5. LCU 0
Kade Bragg continued his dominant season on the mound for the Rams after shutting out the Chaps while allowing only one hit through seven innings. He collected eight strikeouts with one walk to improve to 8-0 on the season.
After three scoreless innings by both teams, the Rams tallied three runs in the top of the fourth, scoring on an error by LCU before RBI hits from
Tyler Boggs and
Reese Johnson.
The Rams added one more run in the fifth as
Kamden Kelton singled to score
Thomas Cain while in the sixth inning,
Jacob Guerrero collected a hit to score Johnson for the final run of the game.
GAME TWO: ASU 20, LCU 6
The second game of the doubleheader saw much more scoring from the Rams as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Cain earned a bases-loaded walk before a two-RBI single by
Jordan Williams and a sac fly by Kelton.
The Chaps climbed back to tie the game, scoring one run in the first and second innings before adding two in the third.
ASU answered back in the fourth as Guerrero hit a single through the left side to score two before a fielding error brought in another run. LCU cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning, tallying two more runs to make it 7-6.
Mason Bryant started on the mound for the Rams, allowing six runs on nine hits through 3 1/3 innings to go along with three strikeouts.
Jackson Haga tallied his first victory of the season, through three 2/3 innings in relief while collecting five strikeouts and allowing only four hits.
The Rams broke away in the fifth inning, scoring six runs starting with a two-RBI double by Johnson. Guerrero reached on a fielder's choice while bringing in
Justin Harris on the play before a triple from
Tripp Clark and a double from Cain made it 13-6.
After adding to the lead in the sixth with a single by Boggs, the Rams dropped six more runs in the seventh, capped off by a three-RBI double by
Conagher Sands.
Clark finished with a team-high three hits while Sands, Guerrero, and Cain each had three RBIs.
The Rams and Chaps close out the series tomorrow with game four set for 1 p.m.
