FRISCO, Texas – At the conclusion of a tightly contested two versus three matchup, the Angelo State women's basketball team bested UT Tyler, 62-53 Saturday afternoon, earning themselves a place in Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship game.
The Rambelles improve to now 24-6 on the year and are heading to their first LSC Tournament final appearance since the 2018-19 season, seeking their first championship since 2015-16.
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
- Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant got things started for the Rambelles with five straight points to put the two-seed up early, 5-2.
- The Flacons would pull ahead going on a 10-3 run before Madeline Stephens made a layup late as the Rambelles went into quarter number two trailing 12-10.
- The Patriots would surge ahead by four, before the Rambelles rattled off nine straight, taking a 21-16 lead with 4:06 before the half.
- The Blue and Gold would hold UTT scoreless over the last 3:33, surging ahead by nine behind five points by Sawyer Lloyd, leading 28-19 heading into the half.
- Stephens would score four straight after a Landry Morrow triple as the Rambelles increased the lead to ten, 35-25, with five minutes to go in the third.
- A pair of back-to-back triples by McGhee-Pleasant and Lloyd put the Rambelles up 15, 43-28, with 2:20 remaining in the quarter.
- The Patriots would respond, scoring nine straight, but Lloyd would hit one more jumper before the quarter ended, Rambelles leading 45-37.
- McGhee-Pleasant would restore the Rambelles lead back to 10, 50-40, after hitting a triple with 5:53 to go.
- The Patriots would get as close as six, but the Rambelles made free throws down the stretch, advancing to the LSC Tournament finals with a 62-53 victory.
GAME STATS
- McGhee-Pleasant led all scorers with 16 points, while also pulling down eight rebounds.
- Stephens earned her eighth double-double of the year and second straight after posting 12 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists.
- Lloyd also earned a double-double, her eighth, finishing with 14 points and 10 boards, playing all 40 minutes.
- Morrow had a big day as well with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
- The Rambelles defense had a big day, limiting the Patriots to their worst shooting performance of the season after going just 18-59, 30.5 percent from the field.
- The 53 points were the fifth least UTT has scored in a single game this year.
- With the win, the Rambelles have now beaten every team but one in the conference this season (UAFS).
- This, the Rambelles 24th win of the year is the most in a single season since the 26-win regional finals team in 2018-19.
