FRISCO, Texas – After trailing by as much as 15 in the second half, the Angelo State women's basketball team battled back to win their sixth Lone Star Conference Tournament title with a last second 63-62 victory over Texas Woman's Sunday afternoon at the Comerica Center.
40 MINUTE RUNDOWN
- The three ball was working early for the Rambelles as Landry Morrow drained the teams second of the game to put the Blue and Gold up 8-2 with just under six minutes to go in the first.
- The Pioneers would respond with a 9-2 run of their own over the next four minutes to retake the lead 11-10 at the 2:28 mark in quarter one.
- The teams traded buckets down the stretch as TWU took a 15-14 lead into the second quarter.
- The Pioneers would score 10 straight to open up a 25-14 lead to begin the second as the Rambelles found themselves in a ton of early foul trouble.
- Madisen Honea and Alexandra Bednarczyk made a pair of buckets as the Rambelles looked to chip away at the Pioneer lead, still trailing 30-22 with 2:01 before the half.
- Sawyer Lloyd would hit one more bucket before the break as the Rambelles found themselves behind 10 yet again, 34-24.
- The Pioneers came out of the half where they left off and increased their advantage to 15, 40-25 with just over seven minutes to play.
- Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant, Madeline Stephens, and Lloyd all scored for the Rambelles, pulling them back within nine, 40-31 with 5:20 to go in quarter three.
- Stephens scored four more down the stretch as the Rambelles chipped the lead down to seven, 45-38, heading into the final frame.
- Lloyd and Stephens each scored four out of the gates in the fourth as the Blue and Gold pulled within two, 48-46 with 8:07 left in the title game.
- A triple by Stephens gave the Rambelles their first lead since the first quarter, 53-50 with six and a half to go.
- TWU would surge ahead by five, 58-53, responding to the Rambelles lead by scoring eight straight.
- Lloyd, Stephens, and Morrow would each score down the stretch as the Rambelles completed the comeback and earned the sixth LSC Tournament Title in program history.
GAME STATS
- Stephens would lead all scorers in the championship, finishing with 24 points on 10-13 shooting. Stephens would go on to be named the LSC Tournament MVP following her performances this weekend.
- Lloyd was the only other Rambelle in double-digits, finishing with 14 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. With the six assists, Lloyd became the Angelo State all-time leader in assists, now with 377 in her career.
- McGhee-Pleasant finished with nine points and four rebounds as she struggled with foul trouble for most of the contest.
- Aicha Ndir (5), Keniah Williams (5), McGhee-Pleasant (4), and Lloyd (4) were all in foul trouble in the win.
- Olivia Pedigo and Bednarczyk combined for 13 big minutes for the Rambelles, making a presence defensively.
- The Rambelles win their sixth LSC Tournament title in school history and improve to 6-4 all-time in the title game.
- This marks the Rambelles first tournament title and automatic bid to the NCAA DII Tournament since the 2016 season.
- Stephens was joined by Lloyd and Morrow as members of the LSC All-Tournament team.
