CANYON, Texas – In the final regular-season game of the year, the top-ranked Angelo State baseball team picked up a victory over West Texas A&M, defeating the Buffs 10-7 to split the series at Wilder Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Rams close out the regular season with a 42-8 overall record while going 40-8 in Lone Star Conference play.
WT struck first, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings to take an early 4-0 advantage.
The Rams turned this around in the third innings, putting up eight runs in all. Three of the runs came off errors and a wild pitch by the Buffs while
Austin Beck opened the scoring with a double to left field to score
Jacob Guerrero.
Jackson Hardy recorded a two-RBI double to bring home
Justin Harris and
Jordan Williams.
Jackson Berry started on the mound for Angelo State, tossing one 1/3 inning and giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits while
Mason Bryant threw two 2/3 innings in relief with two runs on three hits to pick up the win and improve to 4-1 on the season.
The Buffs tallied a run in the bottom of the third and fifth innings to cut the lead to 8-6.
ASU tacked on two more runs in the seventh as
Thomas Cain grounded out to score
Kamden Kelton on the play before Guerrero hit his second home run of the series, this time a solo shot to left field.
Throwing in relief for the Rams was Austin Teal who tossed three 1/3 innings with one run on one hit.
Guerrero collected three hits to lead the Rams on the day while Williams and Hardy finished with two hits each.
The Rams will turn their attention to the postseason as they open the first round of the LSC Tournament at home next weekend.
