No. 11 Rams Use Strong Second Half to Defeat Mustangs

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team opened 2024 with a 77-64 win over Western New Mexico on Thursday evening inside the Junell Center – Stephens Arena, bumping their winning streak to ten games.

With the score tied 33-all entering halftime, the Rams responded by starting the second half with a 10-0 run in the first two minutes as they never trailed from that point onward.

The Rams' defense stood out in the contest, with the Mustangs only shooting 35.8 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from three. The Rams blocked a season-high seven shots and forced the visitors into 12 turnovers.

Conversely, the Rams took care of the ball, turning the ball over only seven times, their fewest in a game this season; the Rams also assisted on 20 of their 27 field goal attempts, their highest number in LSC play this season.

Three Rams – Kevon Godwin, Keyshawn Embery-Simpson, and Trey Farrer – scored in double figures on the evening; every Ram that entered the game got their name on the score sheet.

Playing all 40 minutes, Godwin scored 17 points, making four threes. He grabbed five rebounds, had four assists and a pair of steals, one of four Rams to record two steals.

Embery-Simpson had 15 points while Farrer recorded his third double-double of the season with 12 points and ten rebounds in only 21 minutes of action; the forward also blocked a pair of shots.

In his first start for Angelo State, DJ Basey scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds; he also blocked a season-high four shots, the second time he's reached that mark and the first since opening night.

Shemar Smith and Carvell Teasett had seven points apiece, and Willie Guy had a career-high nine assists.

The Rams improve to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play; the Rams also improve to 18-0 on their home floor under head coach Vinay Patel.

The Rams close out their weekend on Saturday afternoon when they host Eastern New Mexico, who are coming off a three-point loss at the hands of UT Permian Basin in Odessa this evening.
