SAN ANGELO, Texas – The top-ranked Angelo State baseball team collected two wins on Saturday in a doubleheader against Cameron, winning 8-2 and 15-3 at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the pair of victories, the Rams move to 7-2 on the season and in Lone Star Conference play.
GAME 1: ASU 8, CU 2
The Rams came out the gates firing with
Tayten Tredaway doubling to center field to score
Blake Wilhoite and
Tripp Clark for the early lead. After a balk, the Rams collected three walks to add another run.
Cameron responded with a run of their own before ASU added three more to the board in the second inning. Tredaway drew a bases-loaded walk to score
Austin Beck. In the ensuing at-bat, Kelton singled to left-center to score Clark and Wilhoite.
In the fourth inning, Wilhote singled to lead off the inning before Clark hit his second home run of the year to extend the lead to five runs. He finished the game reaching base in all three of his plate appearances with two RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base.
Dax Dathe made his second start of the season and delivered a gem as he struck out 10 while allowing a lone run on three hits over 5.2 innings.
The Aggies scratched another run across in the seventh with a solo home run before
Caleb Heuertz entered the game and struck out the final two batters to close out game one.
GAME 2: ASU15, CU 2
Like game one, the Blue and Gold took advantage of the team's first plate appearances as they batted through the lineup to open the ball game with seven of them reaching base and four of them scoring.
Tripp Clark singled to left field to score
Blake Wilhoite, who drew a walk, and
Austin Beck, who reached via a hit-by-pitch. Later in the inning,
Justin Harris grounded out to score
Tayten Tredaway and in the next at-bat,
Jacob Guerrero doubled down the right-field line to score
Kamden Kelton.
The Rams kept their foot on the gas pedal as they went on to score 11 runs over the next five innings. Highlighting those scores is an RBI triple from Clark in the second and an RBI double from
Conagher Sands, who entered the game in the top of the fourth.
Cameron responded to the avalanche of runs in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run and a lone run in the sixth.
Alezeah Gutierrez started on the bump for the Rams and continued the momentum from his previous start as he finished the day allowing an earned run off two hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings of work.
The Aggies threatened another run in the seventh inning, but it was quickly shut down by
Colby Casey, who entered in the sixth inning and collected two strikeouts on his way to completing the doubleheader sweep.
The Rams will go for the series sweep tomorrow with game four scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
