Kevon Godwin etched himself into the record books as he became the 13
th player in the program's history to surpass the 1,000-point mark, doing so with a 22-point effort as the Rams took the nation's top-ranked team, West Texas A&M, to overtime before falling to the Buffs 94-90 on Saturday afternoon inside the Junell Center.
Sitting at 999 points, the Rams'
Shemar Smith rebounded a missed Buffs free throw with seven minutes remaining in regulation before throwing the outlet to Godwin, who drove down to the other end, finishing with a tough up-and-under layup.
With only five points at halftime, Godwin exploded for 14 points after the halftime break as the Rams' hung with the top team in the country.
Godwin finished the game with 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field, converting three of his eight attempts from three.
As a team, the Rams shot 50.9 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from three.
Willie Guy and
Trey Farrer each scored 16 points; Guy went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line and led the Rams with four assists, and Farrer was 6-of-9 from the field in 23 minutes as he battled foul trouble.
Keyshawn Embery-Simpson had 15 points, making three three-pointers.
Shemar Smith led all players with 11 rebounds; the Rams' forward was responsible for a third of the Rams' rebounds on the day.
The Rams are now 15-8 on the season and 10-7 in conference play; they close out their home schedule next weekend as they host Cameron and Midwestern State.
