Rams Split Doubleheader Against UTPB on Saturday

ODESSA, Texas – The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against UT Permian Basin, winning game one 24-7 before falling in game two 4-3 at Roden Field.
 
With the split, the Rams move to 8-3 overall on the year and in Lone Star Conference play.
 
GAME 1: ASU 24, UTPB 7
The Rams took a quick lead to start the day as Jacob Guerrero tripled in the first inning to bring home Blake Wilhoite before scoring on a wild pitch. In the second inning, Wilhoite grounded out while scoring Conagher Sands on the play to make it 3-0.
 
In the bottom of the second, UTPB tied the game, scoring two runs on a double before a singled through the right side evened the score. The Falcons put up two more runs in the third, hitting a homer to left field before an RBI double made it 5-3.
 
The Rams took control in the fourth inning, putting up eight runs with Tayten Tradaway and Sands both collecting two-RBI hits as the Rams jumped out to a 9-5 lead.
 
After a sac-fly got another run for the Falcons, the Rams put up three more runs in the fifth as Weston Valasek cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to extend the lead to 14-6.
 
Dax Dathe started on the mound for ASU, throwing three innings with six runs on seven hits and three strikeouts.
 
The Rams continued the scoring in the sixth, putting up five runs, capped off by a double by Sands that brought in three runs. In the seventh, Sands added two more RBIs to his total, singling to right field while Ryan McDaniel hit a two-RBI triple for the final runs of the game.
 
Earning the win was Scott Ellis who pitched four innings of work with one run on four hits and three strikeouts.
 
GAME 2: UTPB 4. ASU 3
The Rams got on the board first in game two of the doubleheader as Guerrero homered to left field in the first inning.
 
ASU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as Sands hit a sac-fly to center field to score Tredaway on the play.
 
Alezeah Gutierrez started on the mound in game two, throwing five innings of work with four runs on six hits and five strikeouts.
 
The Falcons took the lead in the bottom of the frame, hitting a three-run home run to make it 3-2.
 
After UTPB added another run in the sixth, the Rams cut into a lead wit ha solo home run by Jaxon Weatherly but they wouldn't be able to get the tying run in.
 
Caleb Heuertz tossed an inning of relief without a hit, allowing one walk with a strikeout.
 
The Rams close out the series against the Falcons with game four tomorrow with first pitch set for noon.
