SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team sent out their six seniors in memorable fashion on Saturday afternoon inside the Junell Center – Stephens Arena, defeating Midwestern State in triple overtime in their home finale.
The win is the first-ever for the Rams in a triple-overtime contest, having lost their previous three.
The fourth triple-overtime game in program history and the first from the Rams since 2010, the game featured the score tied ten times and 11 lead changes, a
Kevon Godwin buzzer-beater to force overtime, and five Rams, all seniors, scoring in double figures in their last game on their home court.
The Rams held as much as a 16-point lead over the Mustangs; however, the visitors went on a 24-6 run over a 10:12 stretch to claim a lead with under four minutes to play.
With the score tied at 65, All-LSC point guard Pierre Sanders made a turnaround jumper to give the Mustangs a two-point lead with 0.4 seconds left on the clock.
On the ensuing inbounds play, guard
Carvell Teasett inbounded the ball the length of the court toward the other baseline, where Godwin caught and sunk the basket to keep the Rams alive.
Keyshawn Embery-Simpson and Godwin each exceeded the 20-point mark for the Rams, with Embery-Simpson leading all players with 24 points.
Embery-Simpson made four of the eight three-pointers for the Rams on the day. He also grabbed seven rebounds, blocked three shots, and nabbed three steals.
Godwin scored 21 points, none more crucial than his two points to end regulation. He shot 8-of-16 from the field and made a pair of threes. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had six assists.
Godwin's 21 points see him pass David Milburn for 11
th on the ASU all-time scoring list; the Floridian now sits at 1,049 career points.
Trey Farrer has 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, also going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. He grabbed six rebounds as he logged a career-high 44 minutes of action.
Willie Guy had 12 points, and
DJ Basey had ten points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the field.
Guy, Godwin, and Embery-Simpson all logged 50 minutes of game action, while Farrer and
Shemar Smith had 44 and 42 minutes, respectively.
The Rams are now 17-8 on the season and 12-7 in conference play; they close their home calendar with a 10-2 record inside the Junell Center this season.
The Rams are on the road next weekend to take on DBU and UT Tyler.
