SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The 15
th-ranked Angelo State baseball team fell just short of the comeback against St. Mary's on Saturday, falling 13-12 at Dickson Stadium in game three of the series.
With the loss, the Rams move to 19-9 overall on the year and 18-9 in Lone Star conference play.
The Rattlers opened the scoring early, putting on six runs in the bottom of the first inning, starting off with a two-RBI double to left center before adding another run in the second inning.
ASU got on the board in the fourth inning as
Tayten Tredaway doubled to score
Tripp Clark followed by a double from
Weston Valasek. After
Conagher Sands brought in a run on a ground out,
Ryder McDaniel hit a two-run home run to make it 7-5.
The Rattlers got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a single through the right side.
In the sixth inning, McDaniel tallied another RBI, grounding out while scoring Valasek on the play. StMU extended the lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning, hitting a two-RBI single and two-RBI double to make it 12-6.
The Rams kept up the fight in the seventh as
Justin Harris hit a solo home run before Clark doubled to score
Jacob Guerrero and came around to score on an error.
In the eighth, Guerrero closed the gap with a two-RBI single up the middle while Sands tied the game in the ninth on a single to center field, scoring Valasek.
The Rattlers were able to hang on in the end, leading off the bottom of the ninth with a single before a sac-fly brought in the final run.
In a game that saw eight pitchers for the Rams,
Mason Bryant pitched three innings in relief with two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Johnny Stacy picked up the loss, throwing 2 2/3 innings with one run on four hits and two strikeouts.
McDaniel led the Rams with RBIs while Guerrero finished with four hits and Sands and Valasek both recorded three hits.
The Rams will conclude the series with the Rattlers tomorrow with game four set for 1 p.m.
