SAN ANGELO, Texas – An RBI-double from
Jacob Guerrero allows the No. 20-ranked Angelo State baseball team to walk off a polarizing series opener against the Oklahoma Christian by a score of 12-11 on a windy Friday night in the confines of Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the win, the Rams rise to a 14-8 record, 13-8 in Lone Star Conference play while the Eagles fall to 3-16 record, 3-14 in the LSC.
The scoring came early and often as a ground-rule double off the bat of
Tripp Clark scored Guerrero, who reached on a fielder's choice, for the game's opening salvo in the first inning.
Tayten Tredaway followed that with a single down the right field line to score Clark to make it an early two-run lead in favor of the Rams.
Oklahoma Christian responded in the second inning, taking advantage of five walks, an error and a couple of base hits to score five runs before
Colby Casey forced a ground ball double play to end the threat. Casey remained in the game and delivered another three complete innings allowing only one hit while striking out five batters including the Eagles side in the third.
The Blue and Gold battled back to tie the game in the third inning thanks to RBI hits from Clark, Tredaway and
Conagher Sands. The fifth inning saw the Rams retake the lead as
Justin Harris grounded out with the bases loaded to score Sands. The sixth inning bared witness to that lead being extended to five runs highlighted by Sands forcing an Eagle error to score Guerrero and
Ryder McDaniel laying down a bunt to score Clark from third.
The Eagles screeched back in the back third of the ball game as they plated two runs in the seventh from a dropped fly ball and added one more in the eighth from an RBI single through the right side to cut the Rams' lead down to two runs. The Eagles retook the lead in the ninth as they battled through multiple two-strike counts to score three runs and put the pressure on the home half of the ninth.
In the ensuing half inning,
Justin Harris came back from a two-strike count to draw a lead-off walk. After advancing on a wild pitch,
Blake Wilhoite reached base with a bunt single which moved Harris to third. This put them in position for Guerrero to line the ball over the center fielder's head to score the runners and secure the walk off victory.
The Rams will continue the series against the Eagles with a double-header on Saturday, Mar. 9 scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
