SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 24-ranked Angelo State (34-15, 32-15 LSC) baseball team earned a split of Saturday's doubleheader against No. 5-ranked West Texas A&M (34-15, 33-14 LSC) to take a 2-1 series lead on the weekend at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
GAME ONE: WT 7, ASU 2
The Buffs took the lead early with a two-run home run in the game's opening frame. The Rams answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first as Jacob Gerrero hit a one out single and scored on
Tripp Clark's double to left field. After a strikeout,
Tayten Tredaway singled up the middle to score Clark.
The top of the second proved to be the turning point in the game as ASU allowed three errors and two walks which turned into four runs off just two hits for the visitors. WT added another run in the top of the fourth on a ground out.
Alezeah Gutierrez started on the mound for the Rams and was the pitcher of record, dropping to 7-4, after he allowed all seven runs, three earned, off four hits and three walks in 4.1 innings of work.
GAME TWO: ASU 12, WT 6
The nightcap saw ASU's offense come alive beginning in the bottom of the first when three walks loaded the bases for
Conagher Sands when forced a fielder's choice to score
Tayten Tredaway from third.
After the Buffs responded with a solo home run in the top of the second,
Weston Valasek led off the ensuing inning with a long ball of his own. After two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases once again, Tredaway hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score the second run of the inning.
The runs kept scoring in the third as
Tripp Clark homered down the left field line to lead off the inning. Sands then walked and advanced to third on a single by
Kamden Kelton. After a wild pitch scored Sands, Valasek tripled to right field, which scored Kelton.
Ryder McDaniel followed that with an RBI single of his own to extend the lead to six runs.
Dax Dathe started on the bump in game two and went on to deliver a gem for ASU as he allowed one earned run off five hits and a walk while striking out six in five innings.
The Rams added five more runs in the fifth that was highlighted by a three-run home run to left center off the bat of Clark to make it a 12-1 contest.
West Texas answered back with five runs over the course of the final two innings before
Jude Cook earned a strikeout to secure the victory.
The Rams will look to clinch the series on Senior Day tomorrow, April 28 with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
