CARY, N.C. – A go-ahead single from
Christian Garnette allowed the eighth-seeded Angelo State baseball team to down top-seeded Central Missouri 3-2 in 11 innings in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship on Saturday night.
With the win, the Rams advance to the winner's bracket and will take on fourth-seeded Point Loma on Monday, June 3.
The action began in the top of the third inning when
Justin Harris led off with a bunt single down the third base line. After he stole second,
Ryder McDaniel singled to left center field to advance Harris to third before
Tayten Tredaway hit a sacrifice fly to tally the first run of the ballgame.
UCM struck back in the bottom of the frame as the Mules pieced together a lead-off walk, a single and back-to-back doubles to score two runs and take the lead.
Caleb Heuertz pitched a gem in relief, coming in during the third inning and striking out the Mules for the third out. He kept UCM scoreless through the next seven innings, allowing three hits and three walks. His longest outing of the season, Heuertz recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts.
The Rams tied the game in the eighth inning as Garnette led off by getting hit by a pitch and stole second during the next at-bat. After McDaniel moved the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt, Tredaway grounded out to the right side of the infield to score the run.
In the top of the 11
th inning with two outs,
Blake Wilhoite got on base after a pitch hit him before stealing second. With a full count, Garnette drove the ball through the right side to score Wilhoite and give the Rams the go-ahead run.
Johnny Stacy closed out the game for the Rams in the bottom of the inning, striking out one batter and collecting his fourth save of the season to secure the win.
The Rams will face off against the Sea Lions in their second game of the tournament on Monday with the first pitch set for 5 p.m. CST.
