Rams Basketball Signs Sterling Gaston-Chapman

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State men's basketball coach Vinay Patel announces his fourth transfer signing of the summer with the addition of senior guard Sterling Gaston-Chapman.

A 6-foot-4 guard, Gaston-Chapman comes to San Angelo from Division I UT Arlington, where he started five games last season for the Mavericks, averaging 2.2 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.

"Sterling is a very important addition to our program. He has an infectious personality and has a chance to help us on both ends of the floor," said Patel. "His physicality and toughness are something our entire staff is excited about. We believe he can be a 3-level scorer for us, but he is also a guy who will do anything to help his team win!"

Gaston-Chapman started his collegiate career at the University of Tulsa, where he was teammates with former Ram Keyshawn Embery-Simpson. As a sophomore for the Golden Hurricanes, Gaston-Chapman started 18 of 30 games and averaged 3.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest.

"At UTA and Tulsa, Sterling was called upon to be one of his team's best defenders. Since we arrived at ASU, we have taken great pride in the defensive end, and this addition helps strengthen our emphasis on that end of the floor," said Patel. "He is a leader, and he is a winner! We are excited to welcome Sterling to the RamFam, and we know our fans will love watching him compete in the Blue and Gold!"

In his prep career, Gaston-Chapman was a three-star recruit from Campus High School in Wichita. Graduating as the Colts' all-time leading scorer, Gaston-Chapman was a two-time all-metro and two-time all-state selection.

As a junior, he averaged 17.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.5 steals per game and was named the Class 6A Player of the Year. He was also selected as the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League (AVCTL) Division I Most Valuable Player.

His senior season saw him average 19.1 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.1 steals per game for the Colts.

The Rams are coming off a season in which they went 19-11 overall and qualified for the South Central Regional for the second straight season under Patel's leadership.
