Grand Junction, Colo. – The Angelo State volleyball team collected two sweeps in two matches on their first day of competition at the Maverick Fall Classic hosted by Colorado Mesa, defeating Adams State in the morning before downing Cal Poly Humboldt in their nightcap.
Against the Grizzles to start the day, the Belles won their sets 25-14, 25-14, and 25-16. They hit .287 for the match and held the Grizzlies to a .054 attack percentage.
The Belles blocked a season-high eight attacks from the Grizzlies while out-digging their RMAC opposition 46-34 and recording ten service aces.
Freshman
Sydney Thornton recorded a career-high ten kills and led all players with five blocks; the Prosper product hit .533 for the match.
Caleigh Enax and
Adeline Ortman led the match with 11 digs each, while
Evelyn Torres had ten digs. Enax led the way with three service aces, while Ortman led the match with 34 assists to record her first double-double for the Blue and Gold.
The Lumberjacks were stiffer competition for the Belles, but the Belles pulled out the sweep with 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 set wins.
The Belles hit a season-high .337 against the Lumberjacks, including a first set where they only committed three errors to tally a .435 attack percentage in the opening frame.
Torres recorded her third double-double of the season with ten kills to go with 13 digs.
Madi Parrish had nine kills and three aces,
Kaila Garnett had seven kills, and middles
Demi Carter and
Hannah Spencer had six kills each.
Carter led the team with a .556 hitting percentage, while Spencer hit .455. Ortman assisted 33 times for the Belles in the win.
The Belles improve to 6-1 on the season, tied for most wins in the LSC this season, and close out their weekend tomorrow against Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 15 Colorado Mesa.
