No. 2 Rams Score 43 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Lobos

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 2 Angelo State baseball team put up a combined 43 runs in the double header sweep of Sul Ross State on a windy Saturday afternoon at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the sweep, the Rams improve to a 9-2 record and drop the Lobos down to 1-10.

GAME ONE: ASU 25, SRSU 4
Action began quickly in the bottom of the first of game one as Ethan Flodstrom led off the inning with a walk before Jacob Guerrero blasted a home run down the right field line for the games' first runs.

The Rams then went on to put up an additional 12 runs on just six hits, eight walks and two hit-by pitches. Further highlights of the inning include a bases clearing double from Blake Wilhoite and a couple of two RBI doubles from Justin Harris and Guerrero as ASU went through the batting lineup twice, sending 19 total men to bat in the inning.

After Sul Ross responded with a run in the top of the second, the Rams loaded the bases for the third time in the ball game for a RBI single from Lane Hutchinson, a drawn walk from Wilhoite and a fielder's choice to increase the lead back to 16 runs.

Sul Ross State scratched another run across in the fourth before a three-run home run from Hunter Holt made it a 20-2 contest after four complete innings.

Dax Dathe got the start on the bump in game one and the senior turned in a performance where he allowed the two aforementioned runs off five hits and three walks while collecting five strikeouts on the way to earning his second victory of the season.

The Lobos doubled their score in the top of the fifth when a one out single led to a two-out, two run home run over the right field wall off David Dressendorfer, who entered in relief of Dathe to begin the inning.

Two home runs were the response in the ensuing half inning as Brett Smajstrla put a solo shot over the center field wall and after a double that forced a pitching change, Lane Hutchinson greeted the new pitcher with a two-run shot over the right field wall to make the score 23-4.

To reach the final score, Guerrero led off the bottom of the sixth inning with his second home run of the ball game off the scoreboard in right center field. Later in the inning, after a base hit and a couple walks loaded the bases, Hunter Holt hit a sacrifice fly to score the runner from third.

GAME TWO: ASU 18, SRSU 0
Similar to the day's opener, the Rams hit the ground running and utilized a RBI groundout and a RBI single from Austin Beck to jump to a quick 2-0 lead after the opening inning.

The Blue and Gold followed with an additional nine runs combined in the second and third innings highlighted by a RBI double from Ethan Flodstrom in the second and a two-run home run from Brett Smajstrla in the third to make it an 11 run lead.

Johnny Stacy was given the start in game two and he did not disappoint as he only allowed just four total baserunners with none of them passing second base as the redshirt sophomore collected a couple of strikeouts on route to his second straight win on the bump.

Scoring picked back up in the bottom of the fifth when a single from Weston Valasek and a double from Lane Hutchinson led to a RBI groundout from Chase Pendley to increase the lead to 12 runs.

Then, in the bottom of the sixth, three straight walks loaded the bases for a bases-clearing double from Tayten Tredaway. After another double from Valasek, Hutchinson singled to right field to score both Tredaway and Valasek. Finally, a single to left field scored Hutchinson and brought the game to its final score as Jude Cook and Keene Kreusler completed the shutout and secure the doubleheader sweep.

The Rams will go for the series sweep on Sunday, Feb. 16 with the first pitch from Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium scheduled for 1 p.m.
