Massive First Inning Leads to Run-Rule Win for No. 2 Rams

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 2 Angelo State baseball team utilized a 11-run bottom of the first inning to run-rule St. Mary's by a final score of 23-4 on a clear temperate Friday night at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the win, the Rams improve to a 15-2 record and extend their winning streak to 11 games while dropping the Rattlers to 10-5.

Ethan Flodstrom led off the big first inning with a double to left center which was followed by a RBI single to center field from Jacob Guerrero. Following a second RBI single by Chase Pendley and a hit by pitch drawn by Weston Valasek, Tayten Tredaway launched a ball over the right field wall to extend the lead to six. After the first out was record, RBI singles from Justin Harris and Guerrero capped off a first inning where the Rams sent 15 batters to the plate resulting in 11 runs.

After the Rattlers responded with a run in the top of the third, Tredaway collected his fourth RBI of the night with a single to right field that scored Lane Hutchinson, who reached base with a one-out triple. Following an Austin Beck single, Christian Garnette doubled to center field to score Tredaway. Two batters later, Flodstrom hit a two-RBI single through the middle to extend the lead to 16-0.

Nick Wilson started on the mound for the Rams and he delivered a five inning performance where he allowed the one aforementioned run off three hits while collecting four strikeouts on the way to his fourth pitching victory in five starts this season.

In the ensuing inning, two runners reached base for Beck when he hit a three-run homer over the left field wall. Following Garnette and Harris reaching base, Brett Smajstrla hit a RBI single through the right side to secure the third 20-run game for the Rams this season.

In the bottom of the sixth, two singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for a Jaxon Weatherly three-RBI double to center field that gave the Rams a 22 run lead.

St. Mary's battled back in the top of the seventh as the Rattlers hit three, two out, extra-base hits including a home run to score three runs before Jude Stephens forced a ground out to end the ballgame.

The Rams and Rattlers will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 1 with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. from Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
