SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 2 Angelo State baseball team swept the doubleheader against St. Mary's by a combined score of 18-4 on a clear day at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the wins, the Rams secure the series and extend the winning streak to 13 games as the record improves to 17-2 overall and in Lone Star Conference and drop the Rattlers to 10-7 and 8-7 respectively.
GAME ONE: ASU 10, StMU 4
Action did not begin until the top of the third inning when St. Mary's began the scoring with a double steal to score the game's first run. The Rams responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of an RBI-double from
Austin Beck and a RBI bunt single from
Blake Wilhoite that went over the first baseman's head.
The Rattlers countered in the next half inning with a solo homer and a wild pitch that resulted in a run to retake the lead. However, it would be gone just as fast as it was scored thanks to a home run from
Jacob Guerrero, a two-RBI double from Beck, an RBI ground out from Wilhoite and an RBI single from
Justin Harris to make it a 8-3 game.
Dax Dathe took the mound for the Rams in game one and turned in a four inning performance where he allowed the three aforementioned earned runs off four hits and a walk but struck out seven of the 17 batters he faced but did not receive a decision as the game was tied when he was relieved for by Caleb Huertz who went on to get two strikeouts and a groundout to end the threat.
After the Rattlers scratched a fourth run across in the top of the sixth inning,
Jacob Guerrero led off the ensuing inning with a double down the right field line to break the school record for doubles in a career. Following a
Chase Pendley walk,
Weston Valasek singled through the left side to score Guerrero. The lead then went to six runs when
Tayten Tredaway hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored
Brett Smajstrla, who entered the game to pinch run for Pendley.
GAME TWO: ASU 8, StMU 0
Game two began in a pithing duel between Alizeah Gutierrez and the Rattlers starter through the first three innings as both teams were able to get runners aboard but no one got past second base.
The Rams broke the scoreless tie when
Blake Wilhoite doubled to center field to score
Austin Beck who reached with a double of his own.
Justin Harris followed with an inside the park home run to make it a 3-0 ballgame.
Two innings later, the Blue and Gold added two more runs with back-to-back RBI doubles from
Lane Hutchinson and
Tayten Tredaway to extend the lead to five runs.
In the ensuing inning,
Ethan Flodstrom singled to right and Guerrero drew a walk to put runners aboard for a three-run homer over the left field wall to bring the game to its final score.
Alizaeh Gutierrez turned in a spectacular performance for the second straight weekend as the southpaw from El Paso threw six shutout innings where he allowed three hits and four walks while collecting five strikeouts. He earned his third win of the season but could not complete the shutout as
Seth Foster entered in relief in the top of the seventh and collected three strikeouts to end the ballgame.
The Rams will go for the series sweep of the Rattlers on Sunday, Mar. 2 with the first pitch from Foster Field at 1
st Community Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
