SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 6 Angelo State baseball team swept the doubleheader against Texas A&M International by a combined score of 23-7 on a windy Saturday evening at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the victories, the Rams improve to a 23-6 (21-6) record while dropping the Dustdevils to 11-22 (10-21).
GAME ONE: ASU 12, TAMIU 7
The Blue and Gold began the scoring in the bottom of the second when
Austin Beck drew a one out walk and proceeded to steal second base for a RBI single off the bat of
Blake Wilhoite.
International took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when a walk and a single led to a three-run homer off Rams' starter
Alizaeh Gutierrez. The Dustdevils continued the momentum into the ensuing inning as they were able to double the run total with another three runs and take a 6-1 lead. The southpaw from El Paso left the game after pitching 4.2 innings where he gave up five earned runs off three hits and four walks while collecting six strikeouts.
The Rams stormed back in the bottom of the fifth as
Ethan Flodstrom reached first after being hit by a pitch. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, a hit by pitch and a ground out scored the first two runs of the inning. After another walk loaded the bases for a second time,
Blake Wilhoite hit a two-RBI single to cut the deficit down to one run.
The Dustdevils picked up a run in the following half inning with an RBI single that was charged to
Seth Foster before
Keene Kreusler limited the damage. The right-handed reliever picked up his second win of the season after limiting TAMIU to just two hits the rest of the ballgame.
Brett Smajstrla fueled the completion of the comeback in the bottom of the sixth as the sophomore hit a one out homer over the left field wall. After
Jacob Guerrero doubled to right center field,
Chase Pendley singled through the right side to tie the game. Later in the inning,
Tayten Tredaway hit a two-RBI single to left center to take the lead. After a walk, Wilhoite singled through the right side to score Tredaway and extended the lead to three runs.
Justin Harris gave the Rams run number 11 with an RBI double down the left field line and Wilhoite scored the game's final run on a wild pitch.
GAME TWO: ASU 8, TAMIU 0
Dax Dathe was given the start on the bump in game two of the doubleheader and he came out the gates hot as he struck out eight through the games' first three innings. He went on to complete four innings of work where he did not allow a hit while striking out a season-high ten batters and allowed four walks as the senior earned his fourth win of the season.
The Rams picked up runs in the bottom of the second inning as a led off single from
Lane Hutchinson led to a long ball courtesy of
Tayten Tredaway for the game's first two runs. After
Blake Wilhoite drew a walk, he would score on three separate wild pitches to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.
The Blue and Gold kept the foot on the gas in the following inning as a lead off single and two walks loaded the bases once again for a two-RBI single from Tredaway, a RBI triple from Beck and another RBI single from Wilhoite to push the lead to seven runs.
In the bottom of the fourth, back-to-back singles from
Jacob Guerrero and
Chase Pendley led to a sacrifice fly from
Lane Hutchinson and a bases loaded hit by pitch drawn by
Austin Beck to make it a 9-0 ballgame.
The Rams added two more runs in the ensuing inning when
Brett Smajstrla hit a one out doubled which was quickly followed by a hit by pitch drawn by
Jaxon Weatherly before
Hunter Holt and Hutchinson hit back-to-back RBI singles to bring the game to its final score as
Scott Ellis,
Colby Casey and
David Dressendorfer completed the shutout.
The Rams will go for the series sweep on tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch from Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium scheduled for 1 p.m.
