Top Ranked Rams Sweep Doubleheader Over Greyhounds

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The top ranked Angelo State baseball team came from behind in game one and dominated in game two to sweep the doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico on a humid Friday evening at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

With the wins, the Rams extend the active winning streak to eight games as their now 38-7 (36-7, LSC) record maintains their pole position in the Lone Star Conference standings. While on the other side of the field, the Greyhounds falter to a 26-19 (24-19, LSC) record and slip to seventh place in the conference standings.

GAME ONE: ASU 13, ENMU 10
The Greyhounds jumped ahead early, scoring the game's first nine runs through the first three and a half innings highlighted by a grand slam in the top of the second inning and a two-run homer in the top of the third.

The bottom of the third saw the Rams cut into the deficit beginning with back-to-back singles from Lane Hutchinson and Tayten Tredaway before an error and a balk scored both runners respectively.

Seth Foster responded to the call, entering in relief at the top of the fourth and delivering two innings where he limited the Greyhounds to two hits while collecting two strikeouts to earn his first pitching victory of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Blue and Gold sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs off 10 hits while taking advantage of two errors and a walk. Hutchinson kicked off the scoring in the frame by clobbering a three-run homer over the left field wall. After Brett Smajstrla singled, Blake Wilhoite singled to third base and forced a throwing error that allowed Smajstrla to score from first base. Wilhoite scored in the following at-bat thanks to a double to left center off the bat of Justin Harris. The final six runs of the frame were highlighted by the final two runs when Wilhoite dropped a bunt down which forced a second throwing error in the inning. What was once a 9-0 deficit, became a 13-9 lead in favor of the Rams after two innings.

Eastern New Mexico answered with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth before Luke Olson came on in relief in the sixth inning and struck out three batters to slam the door and earn his fourth save of the season.

GAME TWO: ASU 15, ENMU 1
The Rams maintained the momentum gained in game one of the day and used it to score in each of the first four innings.

In the first, Jacob Guerrero hit a one out single up the middle and was moved to second base on a groundout before Austin Beck tripled down the right field line. Which was then followed by a two-run homer by Lane Hutchinson to take a quick 3-0 lead.

Brett Smajstrla led off the bottom of the second with a solo homer that hit off the radar board in left center field. A single from Christian Garnette and a double from Justin Harris led to a couple more runs in favor of the Rams after Ethan Flodstrom doubled to left center field. Chase Pendley hit an infield single to shortstop before Austin Beck homered over the left center field wall to increase the Rams lead to nine runs.

A fielder's choice scored a run in the third before the Blue and Gold tacked on three more runs courtesy of an RBI single from Garnette and a second two RBI double from Flodstrom to make it a 13-0 lead.

Alizaeh Gutierrez had the start in game two shutdown the Greyhounds bats, allowing just one run from a solo homer in the top of the sixth while collecting seven strikeouts to earn his third career complete game and his second of the season as he improved to a 5-1 record.

The game reached its final score in the bottom of the sixth when Garnette hit a one-out doubled down the right field line to give Harris his first RBI with his double to the outfield. Flodstrom ended the scoring with his RBI single to left field to score Harris.

The Rams will honor its 18 seniors as they go for the series sweep of the Greyhounds on Senior Day tomorrow, Apr. 19 with the first pitch from Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium scheduled for 1 p.m.
