SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 11 Angelo State University baseball team split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with Oklahoma Christian University on Saturday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium during Military Appreciation Day festivities.
The Rams moved to 9-4 overall and remain tied for third in the conference standings.
With the results, the Rams have a 9-4 record, putting them tied in third place in the Lone Star Conference.
GAME ONE: Oklahoma Christian 2, Angelo State 0
Angelo State was limited to two hits in the opener and left runners in scoring position in three separate innings.
Chris Bernal drew a two-out walk in the third, and
Blake Wilhoite followed with a bunt single, but a strikeout ended the threat. In the fifth,
Chase Pendley reached with two outs and advanced on a sacrifice bunt before a lineout stranded him. The Rams' final opportunity came in the seventh when they placed runners on first and third, but a groundball double play ended the game.
Isaac Godard made his second start of the season and pitched three no-hit innings, allowing three walks and striking out three.
Garrett Baumann took the loss after surrendering both runs in one inning of relief. Angelo State used five pitchers in the game.
GAME TWO: Angelo State 17, Oklahoma Christian 4
The Rams rebounded in the nightcap, scoring twice in the first inning on a
Payton Bush RBI bunt and an error forced by Pendley.
The teams traded runs to a 3-3 tie through 2 1/2 innings before
Blake Wilhoite and
Austin Beck delivered RBI singles in the third to regain the lead.
After the Eagles added a run, Angelo State broke the game open with 12 combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Tate Greene and Beck each recorded two-run singles, while Bush drove in four runs with two separate two-RBI singles.
Luke Spencer started and struck out five over two innings, allowing one run on one hit. The Rams used seven pitchers in the game. Baumann, one of three pitchers to appear in both games along with
Jon Shields and
Garrett Villa, earned the win with one inning of relief and two strikeouts. Bush closed the game on the mound, recording a strikeout and inducing a game-ending lineout to
Clayton Broeder, who had entered as a pinch hitter and remained in left field.
The Rams will go for the series win in the weekend finale tomorrow, Feb. 22, with the first pitch from Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium scheduled for 1 p.m.
