No. 13 Rams Split Doubleheader Against UT Dallas

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 13 Angelo State University baseball team split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with UT Dallas on Saturday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium, falling 16-5 in the opener before responding with a 4-2 win in Game 2.

The Rams moved to 17-8 overall and in conference play.

Game 1: UT Dallas 16, Angelo State 5
UT Dallas jumped out to an early lead, scoring 10 runs over the first three innings before adding six more in the fifth and sixth.

Angelo State used five pitchers in the loss, surrendering 22 hits along with two walks and two hit batters.

The Rams scored their first run in the fourth when Payton Bush drove in a run on a bases-loaded groundout. Tate Greene and Brett Smajstrla each added RBI triples later in the game, and Kannon Brooks recorded an RBI single in the final inning.

Game 2: Angelo State 4, UT Dallas 2
The Rams bounced back in the nightcap, opening the scoring in the third inning. With the bases loaded, Payton Bush hit a ground ball that resulted in a throwing error, allowing Tate Greene and Brett Smajstrla to score.

Smajstrla extended the lead in the fourth with an RBI triple to right-center field. In the fifth, Garrett Wallace and Greene executed a double steal that allowed another run to score, giving Angelo State a 4-0 advantage.

Nick Gray earned the win, pitching five innings of one-hit baseball. He issued five walks but struck out six to improve to 2-0 this season.

UT Dallas closed the gap in the seventh with a two-run home run, but Garrett Villa recorded the final out on a flyball to earn his first save of the season.

The Rams and Comets will conclude the series on Sunday with the first pitch from Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium set for 1 p.m.
