Virginia Beach, Va. – The Angelo State track and field teams wrapped up their time at the Division II Indoor National Championships in Virginia Beach, which was highlighted by the performances of
William Opare, who claimed the 400m national title, finished second in the 200m dash, and anchored the Rams' 4x400m relay as they made the comeback to win the title in that event as well.
The Rams finished with 33 points, placing fourth. The Rams claimed seven First Team All-American and a Second Team All-American plaudits, while the Rambelles claimed five Second Team All-American awards this weekend.
Opare and
Rami Balti kicked off Angelo State's day today by running in the final heat of the 400m dash finals, where Opare defeated Grand Valley State's Joshua Page, the defending national champion in the event, with a time of 45.67, which is the second-fastest time ever run in Division II.
Balti improved on his prelim time from Friday, finishing with a time of 46.48 seconds as he finished fourth overall in the event.
Opare returned to the track about 45 minutes later to compete in the final heat of the 200m finals, where he finished second overall to Catawba's Miles Stephens, who clocked a 20.76 to Opare's 20.81.
Around an hour later, the 4x400m relay team of
Taylor Briggs, Balti,
Bautista Diamante, and Opare competed in the final heat, where Opare, the anchor leg, ran a 45.33 split to erase Pittsburg State's lead and give the Rams their second national championship of the weekend.
The quartet clocked a time of 3:07.22, the second-fastest time ever in Division II, just four one-hundredths off the record.
The Rambelles' 4x400m relay team of
Keagan Galmor,
Lainey Jernigan,
Shackelia Green, and
Kylie Frush finished with a time of 3:47.29.
