NEW ORLEANS – Angelo State freshman sprinter
William Opare tallies another accolade, this time being named the USTFCCCA Men's National Track Athlete of the Year, the organization announced this afternoon.
Opare, the freshman from Accra, Ghana, was the high-point scorer at the Division II Indoor Championships, accounting for 20.5 points as he helped propel the Rams to a fourth-place team finish, their best finish at indoor nationals under head coach
Tom Dibbern.
In the past two days, Opare has been named the USTFCCCA Regional Track Athlete of the Year and the LSC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
The Marketing major, after winning the 200m and 400m dash at the LSC Indoor Championships, claimed the 400m national championship while recording a second-place finish in the 200m.
Opare anchored the 4x400m relay that saw the Rams come back against Pittsburg State to claim top honors in the event.
His two winning marks were historic: his 45.67 in the 400 ranks second all-time, and Angelo State's 3:07.22 in the 4×400 is the second-fastest performance in NCAA DII history.
Opare is the first Angelo State athlete since the award's inception in 2016 to win an indoor national athlete-of-the-year honor.
