SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State University baseball team left 14 runners on base and went 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position in a 6-5 extra-inning loss to Texas A&M–Kingsville on a windy Friday night at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The loss dropped the Rams to a 20-11 record, marking their second straight defeat. It also was the first time this season that Angelo State lost a game in which it scored first.
The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Blake Wilhoite and
Austin Beck drew walks before
Chase Pendley advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.
Payton Bush and
Tate Greene followed with a single and a groundout respectively to score both runners.
Texas A&M-Kingsville answered with a run in the second and tied the game in the fourth. Rams starter
Josh Reed issued two walks to open the inning before exiting, and the Javelinas evened the score on a groundout. Reed allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two.
The Javelinas took the lead in the fifth on a leadoff double that later scored and added another run in the sixth against
Garrett Baumann, who pitched three innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits.
Jude Stephens provided 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen to set up a Rams rally in the seventh.
Gamaliel Jones,
Hunter Holt and Wilhoite executed consecutive bunts to manufacture a run and cut the deficit to one.
Texas A&M-Kingsville added a run in the eighth on an RBI double, but
Luke Spencer entered and kept the Rams within reach. Angelo State tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs,
Chase Becker,
Kannon Brooks and Jones drew walks to load the bases.
Brett Smajstrla was hit by a pitch, and Wilhoite followed with another walk to force in the tying run.
Spencer kept the game tied deep into extra innings, pitching 5 1/3 innings of relief while allowing four hits and one walk and striking out seven.
The Javelinas broke through in the 14th. After two quick outs, a single to center field was misplayed, allowing the runner to advance to third and score on the following single to right field.
Angelo State put the tying run on second and the potential winning run on first in the bottom of the inning, but two strikeouts ended the game.
The Rams will look to bounce back in the series on Saturday, Mar. 28 with the doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
