No. 13 Rams Split Doubleheader with Lubbock Christian

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 13 Angelo State University baseball team split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with Lubbock Christian on Saturday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium, winning the opener 6-1 before falling 4-0 in game two.

Game 1: Angelo State 6, Lubbock Christian 1
The Rams took control early and never trailed, opening the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Garrett Wallace.

Lubbock Christian tied the game in the third, but Angelo State responded with three runs in the bottom half. Payton Bush and Brett Smajstrla delivered back-to-back RBI doubles, and Wallace later reached on an error that allowed Smajstrla to score.

Ryan Cook earned the win with his second career complete game. The right-hander allowed one run on seven hits while striking out five to improve to 3-0 this season.

Angelo State added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Chase Pendley drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Blake Wilhoite laid down a sacrifice bunt in the sixth to score Gamaliel Jones.

Game 2: Lubbock Christian 4, Angelo State 0
The Rams were shut out for the fourth time this season as they managed three hits in their 23 at-bats. ASU put a runner in scoring position in only two of the seven innings.

Lubbock Christian scored the game's first run on a wild pitch in the second inning and doubled its lead in the third on an RBI single.

Isaac Godard took the loss for the Rams, pitching 2 1/3 innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four, falling to 1-1 on the season.

The Chaparrals added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run home run to cap the scoring.

The series concludes Sunday with the finale at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
