Garnette, Beck Power No. 19 Rams Past West Texas A&M

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 19 Angelo State University baseball team powered past West Texas A&M 12-2 in a weather-delayed contest Saturday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

The game, which lasted more than five hours due to 2 hours, 57 minutes of delays, saw the Rams improve to 27-13 overall and 12-9 at home.

For the second straight game, Angelo State scored first on an RBI single from Payton Bush.

The Rams broke the game open with an eight-run second inning. Christian Garnette highlighted the frame with a grand slam, while Chase Pendley and Bush followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. Austin Beck capped the inning with a two-run homer to left field, his second in as many games.

Play was halted during the fourth inning, with delays totaling nearly three hours before action resumed.

After play resumed, Cooper Knight drew a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 10 runs. Angelo State added two more runs in the fifth on a Tate Greene RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly from Brett Smajstrla.

Clayton Broeder started on the bump for the Rams and threw 3 2/3 efficient innings before the delay. Jude Stephens earned the win, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. David Dressendorfer and Mason Parsons — making his collegiate debut — combined to finish the game, each allowing one run.

Due to inclement weather, the remainder of the series has been pushed to Sunday. The teams will play a seven-inning game beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a nine-inning contest approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.
