SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 19 Angelo State University baseball team split a doubleheader with West Texas A&M on Sunday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium, clinching the series victory.
The Rams improved to 28-14 overall and 13-10 at home, securing their seventh series win of the season.
Game 1 (7 innings): West Texas A&M 8, Angelo State 2
West Texas A&M built an early lead, scoring the game's first five runs before
Brett Smajstrla drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the second inning.
The Buffaloes added two more runs in the fourth before
Hunter Holt answered with an RBI single up the middle.
West Texas A&M capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly later in the game.
Luke Spencer took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing seven runs on 10 hits while striking out four.
Jude Stephens worked the final two innings, surrendering one run on three hits and one walk.
Game 2 (9 innings): Angelo State 15, West Texas A&M 10
The Rams responded in the series finale, building a six-run lead through the first three innings.
Tate Greene highlighted the early surge with a two-run triple, and
Hunter Holt followed with a sacrifice fly.
After West Texas A&M trimmed the deficit to one, Angelo State added to its lead.
Payton Bush drove in a run on a groundout, and
Austin Beck, Greene and
Jordan Kelly each recorded RBI singles. A balk and a heads-up baserunning play by Kelly added two more runs.
The Buffaloes rallied to tie the game at 10, scoring five runs in the sixth and eventually evening the score in the eighth on a wild pitch.
Angelo State answered in the bottom of the eighth. Beck delivered an RBI single to score Bush, then stole second and third before Greene added an RBI double. Holt reached on a bunt that resulted in an error, allowing another run to score. After loading the bases,
Chase Pendley drove in two runs with a single to center field to extend the lead to 15-10.
Nick Gray closed the game, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the win and improve to 5-1 on the season.
The Rams will close out the regular-season road schedule next weekend, traveling to the Land of Enchantment to play Eastern New Mexico beginning Friday, April 17.
