AUSTIN, Texas – The Angelo State University baseball team surrendered 14 walks, hit nine batters and committed four errors in a doubleheader sweep by St. Edward's on Friday at Lucian-Hamilton Field, falling 8-1 and 15-5.
With the losses, the Rams dropped to 24-13 overall and 14-4 on the road. It marked the first time since March of last season that Angelo State has been swept in a doubleheader.
Game 1: St. Edward's 8, Angelo State 1
The Hilltoppers took control early, scoring four runs in the first two innings behind a two-run home run and two Angelo State errors.
Tate Greene accounted for the Rams' lone run with a bases-loaded walk, but St. Edward's added insurance with a run on a double-play groundout in the third and two RBI singles later in the game.
Chase Pendley led Angelo State offensively, going 4-for-4 with a double and three singles.
Clayton Broeder took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on one hit and one walk while striking out one.
Game 2: St. Edward's 15, Angelo State 5
St. Edward's carried its momentum into the second game, erupting for eight runs in the first inning. The Hilltoppers capitalized on six walks, a hit batter and a grand slam to seize control.
The Rams responded with two runs in the second on a sacrifice fly from
Austin Beck and a bases-loaded walk drawn by
Blake Wilhoite.
Brett Smajstrla added another run in the fourth by stealing home.
St. Edward's extended its lead with five runs, highlighted by a two-run home run and three RBI singles.
Angelo State added runs on a fielder's choice by Smajstrla and an RBI double from
Gamaliel Jones, but could not close the gap.
Nick Gray was charged with the loss after exiting in the first inning. The Rams used seven pitchers in the game.
The Rams will try to salvage a split in the finale on Saturday, Apr. 4 with the first pitch against the Hilltoppers set for 1 p.m.
