SAN ANGELO, Texas – Despite
Alex Woolsey's fourth double-double of the season, the Rambelles dropped a 3-0 (17-25, 15-25, 19-25) contest to Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian in their conference opener at Angelo State's annual “White Out” match at Stephens Arena Tuesday evening. More than 500 students and fans came to the Junell Center wearing white in support of the 'Belles.
The sophomore setter tallied 25 assists, 13 digs, two block assists and a pair of kills in Angelo State's (3-6) loss. Freshman
Shelby Warick notched the first kill of her collegiate career and registered nine digs with one service ace. Sophomore
Chelsea Gibson led the 'Belles offensively with a match-high 10 kills, while also tallying one dig and two block assists.
Abilene Christian (7-2) extended its winning-streak to six games holding Angelo State to a mere .026 hitting percentage. The Wildcats totaled 33 kills, 30 assists and 42 digs, while hitting .266 on the evening.
The Rambelles scored the first few points of game one, but quickly found themselves trying to play catch up after kills by Jordan Schilling and Jennie Hutt put the Wildcats up 7-3. The 'Belles were able to tie the game at nine, but three consecutive Rambelle miscues would give Abilene Christian the lead for good. ACU went on to take the first set, 25-17.
The break between sets did not cool the Wildcats off, as they jumped back into game two tallying three consecutive points. The 'Belles would take the lead on back-to-back kills by freshman Julie Kennedy forcing an ACU timeout. The timeout proved essential as the Wildcats got back into their offensive groove knocking down six points to the Rambelles' one, taking a 9-7 advantage. With the score even at 14, Abilene Christian would finish the second set on a 9-1 run (25-15).
Angelo State fought hard in the third set as the fans watched 10 ties and 13 lead changes. With the set tied at 16 apiece, the Wildcats knocked down a kill and took advantage of an ASU error to take a two-point lead. Abilene Christian tallied seven more points and allowed just three more 'Belles points to end the third set by a score of 25-19.
The Wildcats were led by Schilling's eight kills, four digs, three service aces and .412 hitting percentage. Setter Ijeoma Moronu contributed 25 assists and seven digs for ACU.
The Rambelles will return to the court Thursday, Sept. 16, when they host Tarleton State. First serve is slated for 7 p.m., at Stephens Arena. Live stats and live video are available at AngeloSports.com
